Lovers are Prone to Lying
Taken together, all of the evidence leads to one simple conclusion:
Lovers are prone to lying—husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends lie to each other on occasion. Deception is a fairly common and an inherent part of our intimate relationships (see Miller & Stiff).
Not only does love and betrayal go hand-in-hand, but romantic partners typically get away with it (see catching lovers lying).
And keep in mind that we are not just talking about little, white lies. Unfortunately, people save their biggest and most serious lies for their romantic partners (see Anderson, Ansfield & DePaulo).
Or as two of the most respected scholars of close relationships put it—deception in romantic relationships is a “virtual certainty” (Miller and Stiff, 1993, p. 14).
