Hi Strongsue,
Im sorry for your situation. I went through a situation with my husband where I thought I had herpes. While waiting to be tested (and completely freaking out) I did alot of research on the virus.
I read that the virus can lay dormant for years, and that many people have no symptoms.
I found it hard to believe that such a virus could lay dormant for so long. Especially when one of the outbreak triggers is stress.
Now the tricky part with it is, you have to have had it for at least 3 to 6 months for your body to build up anitbodies to the virus. You cant get an accurate reading if its done before then.
So if your trying to work out where it came from, you can work back from there.
I also read, that the higher your numeric results the longer you have had it.
Its a very tricky virus and one many still debate about the how long and when.
After all the tests I had done, I found out I had Type 1. I have never in my life had a cold sore, nor anything on my face that would resemble an outbreak.
It wasnt until after all the reading and researching I did, that I started to notice when I was having an outbreak.
I had noticed years back that I use to get what I thought was like wind chap, or dry lips on the inside of my mouth that felt like they had split. That was me having an outbreak. That was over four years ago that I can remember that starting.
So Im still on the fence about how long it can lay dormant, I think most of the time its there but the symptoms go unnoticed.
As much as I hate to say it, I really doubt that its laid dormant for 25years. Did you get tested this time because you noticed symptoms?
I think if you had had it previously then you would have noticed.
Also which test did you have done? You need to have the IGG test done and not the IGM.
The sad thing about this is you may never know. Your husband is back peddling with his story.
All I can say is that with what I believe about the virus, I dont think it lays dormant for that long.
I think the majority of people dont notice the symptoms.
Like Betrayed Wife said, talk to your doctor some more and ask him to tell you all he knows about the virus.
Maybe that will be a start in getting some answers.
Good Luck
